One of the largest struggles for my patients is obtaining insurance coverage for semaglutide, aka Wegovy, to treat PCOS and obesity.

  1. Unfortunately, it is still very difficult to obtain insurance coverage, which is why many patients prefer to use compounding pharmacies, which cost an average of $200-$500 per month. This is a very low cost compared to the $1500 or more a month at a commercial pharmacy such as Walgreens or CVS.
  2. There are a few strategies available, such as using your HSA (Health Savings Account). Many employers offer this high-deductible insurance plan, which allows you to deduct tax-free funds from your paycheck to this card, which can be used for any health-related services, including compounded medication.
  3. Another strategy is forgoing traditional insurance entirely and choosing a health Sharing plan that includes a weight loss program. Often, you must be a member for two years to obtain up to $3000 reimbursement for any obesity treatment recommended by a licensed provider. https://zionhealthshare.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Member-Guidelines_05.2023-1.pdf.
