About Unwanted Hair Growth

It’s not uncommon to have unwanted body hair, but women with PCOS often experience this concern on a higher level. Managing facial hair on your own often requires daily or weekly intervention with shaving and waxing to minimize growth. Until you balance your hormones by treating your PCOS, this hair will always grow back, creating lifelong issues such as ingrown hairs and the 5’clock shadow we as women are not happy to experience. The most telltale locations of PCOS-related hirsutism are along the jawline, chin, neck, and upper lip, which can lead to a drastic drop in confidence and make patients feel uncomfortable showing their faces. At PCOS Sisters Telehealth Clinic & Wellness Center, our PCOS specialist nurse practitioner team addresses the root cause of your hair growth and can make you feel confident in showing your face once more.

What We Do

Signs Of Hirsutism

The most obvious sign of hirsutism is seeing thick hair on the neck, chin, jawline, and upper lip. The excess androgens produced in the ovaries of women with PCOS cause more hair follicles to be in an active growth phase. This makes hair appear thicker and fuller in areas where hair isn’t typically noticeable or prevalent. For most women who experience this type of hair growth, the best course of action is to treat the hair at the root, by blocking androgens and treating your hormones. Only after your PCOS is treated can you prevent regrowth. If you have a few stubborn hairs that still need treatment, electrolysis is the only FDA approved permanent hair removal method. Laser is not FDA approved for permanent hair removal and can even cause hypertrichosis a condition where existing hairs might clear, but the laser stimulates new hairs to form in large amounts.

FAQ

Hirsutism FAQ

Unwanted hair growth is caused by an excess production of androgens, which causes the hairs to stay in an active growth phase. This leads to the appearance of thicker facial hair.

Hirsutism is first managed by treating the root cause by balancing your hormones, thereby treating your PCOS. If your PCOS has remained untreated for a long period of time, even after optimal PCOS treatment there may be a few stubborn hairs. This is when Electrolysis, the only FDA approved permanent hair removal method is recommended.

In most cases, Hirsutism in women with PCOS occurs on the chin, neck, and upper lip. The hair can range from light and stiff to dark and thick. While the hair can be temporarily managed with shaving, waxing, and laser, in order to prevent regrowth excess androgens must be decreased prior to hair removal. There are several medications our PCOS Specialist Nurse Practitioner Team prescribes to prevent hair regrowth by lowering androgen levels.

Keep in mind the only FDA approved permanent hair removal method is Electrolysis. In fact, laser may cause hypertrichosis or increased hair growth after initial clearing of existing hairs
If you are planning to complete electrolysis for stubborn remaining hairs after your PCOS is treated, remember plucking and waxing distorts the hair follicle which can make electrolysis less effective.
No it will not, but unfortunately trimming and shaving will cause a blunt tip to the hair which creates the appearance of a thicker hair.

Electrolysis for Hirsutism

What is electrolysis?

Multiprobe electrolysis is an advanced form of electrolysis used for permanent hair removal. Unlike traditional single-probe electrolysis, multiprobe electrolysis utilizes multiple probes to treat several hair follicles simultaneously. This method enhances efficiency and allows for quicker treatment of larger areas like the legs or back. Each probe delivers a precise electrical current to destroy the hair follicle, preventing future hair growth. Multiprobe electrolysis is particularly beneficial for individuals with extensive or dense hair growth, offering a comprehensive solution to managing unwanted hair effectively and permanently.

What is the difference between multi probe and single probe electrolysis?
