ABOUT IRREGULAR PERIODS

Once a girl reaches the end of puberty, her menstrual cycle will begin. It's common for menstrual cycles to be irregular the first few years, but after some time, the body should adjust to a fairly consistent schedule. But this isn't always the case for some women. Certain issues can cause a period to become irregular, ranging from being significantly overweight or underweight to having certain medical conditions. PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in particular is a condition characterized by irregular periods. Irregular periods are different from woman to woman. Dr. Lynsey Johnson, DNP, FNP-C at PCOS Sisters Telehealth Clinic & Wellness Center is a family nurse practitioner who can help women have a regular cycle and improve their health. We're proud to treat patients in the following states and cities:

Florida

North, central, and south Florida, including Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, and Orlando.

Georgia

Including cities of Atlanta, Savannah, Columbus, Augusta, and Macon.

New York

New York City (Manhattan, Upper East side, Upper West side), Queens, Brooklyn, Rochester, and Buffalo.

SYMPTOMS OF IRREGULAR PERIODS

Irregular periods are different from woman to woman. For some, having irregular periods could mean that they bleed too much, too little, or even not at all. Some women will skip a period several months in a row while others may not have a period for over a year or more. The important thing to note with irregular periods is if you notice an obvious change in your cycle, such as:

  • Bleeding too much
  • Bleeding too little
  • Having a cycle that lasts less than 21 days or more than 35 days
  • Not having a period at all
  • Bleeding that lasts longer than seven days
  • Pain, nausea, or vomiting while menstruating

IRREGULAR PERIODs FAQ

What causes periods to be irregular?
There are many factors that can lead a person's period to be irregular or disappear altogether. These include body weight, irregular hormones, certain medications or diseases, and stress. If PCOS is the cause of menstrual irregularity, it is usually due to excess production of androgens and underproduction of progesterone, which is a hormone produced by the ovaries that contribute to menstrual cycles and ovulation.

How do I get my period regular again?
If your irregular periods are caused by PCOS, addressing the condition itself and taking the right medications should ensure that you menstruate on a regular, consistent schedule. To find out the cause of your irregular periods, Dr. Johnson will meet with you personally and evaluate your overall health and symptoms.

Do you accept insurance?
PCOS Sisters Telehealth Clinic & Wellness Center offers both pay per visit and membership subscriptions. We are a cash pay only practice, meaning we do not accept insurance. Cash pay includes credit cards and debit cards. We cannot accept Medicaid or Medicare patients, even if you agree to pay cash as we do not bill insurance.  If you have insurance that covers your labs, imaging, and medications, you may use it, but you might find that our discounted prices are cheaper if you self-pay.

IMPROVE YOUR MENSTRUAL HEALTH

Irregular periods are normal in the first few years of menstruation, but after a few years, your cycle should start to maintain some level of consistency as the body matures. If you frequently experience missed periods or long delays between periods, act now. Regulating your cycle is good not only for fertility purposes but also to ensure that your body is in good health.
